COLOMBIA EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE | A Historic Humanitarian Mission

Yesterday, GEM LATAM was on the ground at the Port of Buenaventura to receive the humanitarian aid shipments to arrive in Colombia following the devastating August 10 earthquake.

After sailing 3,375 nautical miles across the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, the Colombian Navy’s Logistics Support Vessel ARC “La Guajira” arrived at Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura carrying 19 containers and 116 pallets of humanitarian aid from GEM’s Global Headquarters in Miami.

The arrival marked a historic milestone: ARC “La Guajira” successfully completed its first international humanitarian cargo mission, demonstrating the Colombian Navy’s extraordinary logistical capabilities and commitment to reaching communities in need.

The journey was completed by 26 Colombian sailors under the command of Corvette Captain Kateryn Bolaños, who successfully transported this critical aid thousands of nautical miles to Colombia.

GEM LATAM teams were on-site as the vessel was unloaded during an eight-hour operation. Following customs clearance, the humanitarian aid will be transported to GEM’s warehouse in Pereira, where our teams will organize and prepare the supplies for direct distribution to families and communities affected by the earthquake.

This shipment represents one of the largest in-kind humanitarian donations received in Colombia to date as part of the earthquake response. It also marks the first use of ARC “La Guajira” for its primary mission of transporting humanitarian cargo.

Esto incluye 5,996 palés, 30 vuelos de carga, 85 contenedores que ya han llegado al país, 120 contenedores actualmente en tránsito y 5 embarcaciones militares de desembarco, ayudando a transportar suministros esenciales a las comunidades que más los necesitan.

🇨🇴 COLOMBIA — En Colombia, GEM ha movilizado 657,972 libras de ayuda humanitaria, valoradas en más de $5.08 millones. Nuestros equipos han realizado 37 distribuciones en más de 70 municipios, brindando apoyo a 70,750 personas con Kits de Necesidades Familiares, a 86,923 personas con alimentos e hidratación y a 13,270 personas con asistencia no alimentaria.

On the evening of June 24th, back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela, with a 7.1 magnitude quake followed roughly a minute later by an even stronger 7.5 magnitude quake, centered just west of the capital. Buildings have collapsed across Caracas, where rescue crews are searching for survivors.
