Phase 1: Immediate Response
Hurricane Lowell intensified to Category 5 strength before passing west of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi in early September 2026, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, flooding, mudslides, and widespread power outages across Hawaiʻi.
GEM’s Hawaiʻi team, based on Maui, has mobilized to support affected communities on Kauaʻi and Niʻihau, providing immediate assistance and helping families access critical recovery resources. Through GEM’s established network of smart partnerships and the power of public & private collaboration, we are coordinating the delivery and distribution of generators, along with additional essential equipment, to households experiencing power disruption and damage.
In partnership with Stable Road Foundation, Amazon, Good360, and the State of Hawaiʻi, GEM is leveraging existing resources and relationships to move critical equipment directly into the hands of impacted homeowners. This effort is designed not only to address immediate power needs, but to create a sustainable recovery resource for the community.
Through GEM’s Generator & Equipment Program, units will be provided to households for the duration of their recovery and then transferred to another affected family once they are no longer needed. This creates a shared community resource that can continue supporting households throughout the recovery process, extending the impact of every generator and piece of equipment beyond its initial recipient.
GEM has stood alongside the people of Hawaiʻi since the Maui wildfires and remains committed to supporting communities through every stage of disaster response, from immediate assistance to long-term recovery.
