Phase 1: Immediate Response
On August 26th, the Himalayan border region of Nepal & Tibet experienced a major flash flooding event that rapidly engulfed roads, bridges, buildings, and homes. The flooding and subsequent mudslides immediately caused extreme infrastructure damage, damaged critical transportation routes, and destroyed communication access. Hundreds of residents and tourists are missing, with many fatalities reported as search and rescue efforts continue.
GEM’s Asia team, based in Bhutan, has mobilized to the region and will be supporting those affected with immediate needs and support. This team previously responded to the 2023 Earthquake in Nepal, delivering critical supplies to displaced families.
GEM stands with the communities of Nepal and Tibet during this devastating time & remains committed to supporting all those affected.
