Volcano Fuego

Phase 1: Immediate Response

In San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala the Fuego Volcano was slowly erupting, spewing ash and lahar across neighbourhoods. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated from surrounding regions, as well as multiple school and road closures, with tens of thousands more evacuations expected.

The GEM LATAM team, based in Guatemala, is on the ground in affected communities supporting evacuated residents. GEM is supplying food supplies, hygiene products, and water, to the shelters and to the neighbourhoods at risk. GEM LATAM is presently on the ground in Chimaltenango, reaching the rural neighbourhoods of Escuintla and Sacatepequez. Many of these residents have now lost their crops and ability to support their families due to this disaster. GEM also supported these communities in 2018 when the same volcano erupted and affected these areas, and we are committed to helping as long as there is need.
