State of Hawai‘i Responds to Kona Low Impacts, Launches Kona Low Interim Disaster Case Management Program

Phase 1: Immediate Response

The Hawaii’s islands were recently impacted by the most severe flooding event in over two decades, resulting in widespread damage to residential areas, public infrastructure, and essential services. Prolonged and intense rainfall led to significant flash flooding, overwhelming drainage systems and rapidly flooded homes, roads, and businesses.

Emergency response teams conducted large-scale evacuation efforts, displacing thousands of residents, while hundreds required direct rescue from flooded properties and hazardous conditions. The flooding also caused road closures, power outages, and disruptions to transportation and communication networks.

GEM Hawaii, local to Maui, is offering immediate support to those affected and will be implementing long-term support programs to assist in recovery efforts. Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HIEMA) selected GEM as the prime for a new statewide interim DCMP in response to the these Kona Low storms. This $1.5M program will support 40 Disaster Case Managers across 4 counties for the next 3 months.

This Branch supports 5 counties in Hawaii.
