Phase 1: Immediate Response

Early June 8th, The Philippines most populous island of Mindanao was struck by a 7.8 magnitude quake. Immediately, infrastructure was severely damaged and tsunami warnings were put in place for the region. This quake was the strongest since 1976, and has damaged thousands of homes, government buildings, and schools. Currently, 68 people have been declared dead and over 45,000 people have been displaced.

Right now, GEM Europe is on the ground in the Sarangani & Davao Occidental Provinces and conducting distribution efforts in rural areas where the communities have faced the largest-scale destruction. Our teams are distributing food, water, hygiene supplies, and other necessities, ensuring the aid is reaching those who need it most. Sarangani Province and the surrounding areas are among the regions most severely affected, and access to these areas remains a challenge. Destroyed infrastructure and damaged roads have left residents without electricity, clean water, reliable road access, and access to most resources. Our GEM team was one of the first organizations to reach these areas, and to bring in essential supplies. Additionally, new toys were delivered to children, many of whom have never received one before. GEM is collaborating with local authorities to locate these isolated communities and to ensure that they are supported during this recovery period.

Venezuela Earthquakes

On the evening of June 24th, back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela, with a 7.1 magnitude quake followed roughly a minute later by an even stronger 7.5 magnitude quake, centered just west of the capital. Buildings have collapsed across Caracas, where rescue crews are searching for survivors.

The GEM MENA team, alongside our partners HCI & ONSUR, is presently on the ground in Tyre (Soor), Lebanon supporting displaced families and individuals. The ongoing conflict and crisis in Lebanon has left roughly 80% of the population in poverty.

Oklahoma Tornado

GEM is presently on the ground in Enid, Oklahoma where a massive tornado destroyed over 40 homes and tore through neighbourhoods. Considered the strongest tornado of the year, so far, the storm has caused disruptions to power and water systems and to the Vance Air Force Base.

Multiple wildfires are currently burning throughout the state of Georgia, with containment efforts stalled due to dry conditions and high winds. The fires have destroyed dozens of homes, forced evacuations in many communities, and put +1,000 more structures at risk.

Our experienced GEM Caribbean team, based in Kingston, Jamaica, is leading large-scale humanitarian operations across the island in response to Hurricane Melissa. Large scale aid deliveries are underway, with millions of lbs of critical supplies being distributed.
