On October 9, 2026, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Panama region of La Pitaloza in Herrera Province. The shallow earthquake caused significant tremors felt as far as Costa Rica. Widespread structural damage was reported, including damaged homes, collapsed buildings, and destruction to historic landmarks. The earthquake triggered numerous aftershocks, including a powerful 6.6 magnitude tremor, creating further destruction. Emergency response teams and first responders are assessing the extent of damaged infrastructure, disrupted services, and immediate recovery needs.
