Celebrating Empowerment and Unity This Christmas Season: Global Empowerment Mission USA WEST was honored to host our inaugural Tribal Christmas Gathering on Sunday, December 1, 2024, bringing together five First Nations from Central California. This heartfelt event, part of our Tribal Impact Program, served the Tübatulabal of Kern River Valley, Tule River Tribe of Porterville, Big Sandy Band of Western Mono, Cold Springs Mono Tribe of Fresno County, and the Tejon Indian Tribe of Paiute and Chumash descent.
Yesterday’s gathering welcomed over 4,000 attendees, including more than 2,000 youth whose bright futures inspire us to continue empowering and uplifting their journeys. With the generous support of partners such as @good360usa, @nike, and @hasbro, we were able to share love, joy, and empowerment with these incredible families during the holiday season.
We extend special gratitude to our Tule River family and the TRAP program, whose collaboration makes our mission possible, as well as to Eagle Mountain Casino for providing the venue and a delicious feast that made the day truly unforgettable.
This gathering was more than a celebration—it was an opportunity to honor the resilience, culture, and stories of our First Nations, while learning from their ongoing struggles and triumphs. Today marks 1000 days since Russia invaded Ukraine again. Today also marks 999 days since GEM has been on the ground assisting Ukrainians through various programs.

UPDATE on our North Carolina Small Business and Artisan Program
In one of our many responses to Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on North Carolina, GEM started a Small Business Relief Fund, in partnership with The Horse Shoe Farm. Here is a look at some of our first grant recipients, who have received financial assistance to restart their businesses. These artisans, farmers, and small business owners all directly influence WNC’s community and liveliness. The grant funds are allocated towards a variety of needs, such as industrial cleaning, rent in new spaces, equipment replacement, etc. GEM is humbled to assist these individuals and are looking forward to watching their businesses reopen and support the revitalisation of WNC! To date 23 small businesses have already received checks. 6 other businesses will be getting checks this week. 28 local contractors have received tools through the Lowe’s program.
Within our first batch of awarded grants, we have supported Pitch Pine Farms, Robin McCoy Art, Deal Family Farms, Marrero Collection, Rocket Beauty, Engine House Design, Juno Pottery, Gold Roots Jewelry, The Portal Project, Twin Star Tribe, and more. Our amazing and dedicated @globalempowermentmissionmena teams together with @hcicanada’s Jr. Ambassador, 10 year old Renad, distributed huge GEM HCI hygeine kits to hundreds of children and their parents at the Jasour school for displaced children based in Deir Al Balah.
It is the first time in months that these families have received any hygeine kits, but it was the first time they had actually received a kit containing such a versatile range of high quality products, and in such large quantities per box.

Today #GEM dropped off @flewthecoop_ animal supplies to the Miami-Dade Police Department Community Affairs Bureau @miamidadepd who were hosting an event and collecting community donations. Today marks 6 years since the #CampFire destroyed Paradise, Northern California. Many are still unaware of the harrowing experience endured by this small mountain community. With high winds driving flames across the landscape at a staggering pace—equivalent to 80 football fields per minute—the Camp Fire that ignited on November 8, 2018, stands as the most destructive wildfire in California’s history, in terms of structures lost. In a devastating 17-day blaze, more than 23,000 structures were destroyed, most of them homes, making it the deadliest fire in the state’s history.
Since Day 3 of this crisis, GEM has been dedicated to supporting the community. Our teams formed close bonds with survivors, listening to and sharing in their stories. Every year on this day, we pause for 85 seconds of silence to honor those who lost their lives.
Today, four members of our team are Camp Fire survivors themselves, including Elizabeth Jernberg, who now serves as our West Coast Director of Operations for GEM USA West. Elizabeth remains deeply connected to her community and actively supports disaster relief efforts throughout the western region.
Today, she and her team are traveling to Ventura County to support families impacted by the Mountain Fire, bringing with them a unique, empathetic understanding of what it means to face such unimaginable loss.
Elizabeth and her team know firsthand that the impact of these disasters extends far beyond the loss of homes and possessions. It affects the very fabric of lives and dreams, often reduced to ashes. Last night Kyiv was once again attacked with drones and missiles all night. One of the many areas hit was the Institute of International Relations, @iir_official @knu_uni Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
This is the most important college in Ukraine. It has shaped prominent Presidents, diplomats, scientists, astronomist, chemists and more. This dorm building alone houses over 1000 students and teachers. Luckily only the dormitory building suffered damage from shock waves and minor damage to the campus.
@alina.kurs_ , GEM’s International Affairs Director got her master’s degree in international relations here. @andrew.negrych, our @globalempowermentmissionua ops director is also currently getting a masters here.
Thanks to our GEM HGBF window program, the windows will be replaced by Dec 2024 and students can come back. To date, our windows program has replaced over 200,000 windows supporting 600,000 plus people.

Our @globalempowermentmissioneur teams arrived in Valencia, Spain within 24 hours of the historical floods.
Today, our first truck of aid arrived thanks to our partners @goyaeuropa. We’ve established a temporary short term hub the at Iglesia Evangélica Bautista in Puerto Sagunto.
Tomorrow our GEM Europe teams and local volunteers will be distributing supplies in Alaquas, Aldaia, Torrent, Picanya, Albal and Montroy districts.

GEM Europe, in partnership with Goya Spain, is presently responding to the deadly flooding in Valencia, Spain. The floods have reportedly claimed the lives of 95 people and caused severe destruction around the region. Already recorded as Spain’s worst disaster in the last 3 decades, the flash flooding has ruined buildings, roads, bridges, homes, and other critical infrastructure. The GEM Europe team is on the ground in Valencia now offering aid, supplied by Goya Spain, to all those affected. Today marks 30 days since Hurricane Helene caused catastrophic flooding in Western North Carolina. Our GEM advanced teams arrived first to Asheville and we are committed to providing long-term solutions that empower survivors.
To date, GEM has delivered critical aid to individuals and communities most affected by Hurricane Helene, including:
- 23 semi-truck deliveries of essential supplies
- New tools for 28 tradespeople
- Temporary housing in Airbnbs for 30 families
- Over 150 Starlink units delivered to remote communities
- More than 30 helicopter landings for evacuations and supply deliveries
- Launch of a $500,000 fund for small businesses and artisans
