Cyclone Storm Daniel, was the deadliest and costliest Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone in recorded history. It was also the costliest tropical or subtropical cyclone worldwide to occur outside of the Atlantic basin, as well as the deadliest weather event of 2023 to date. The U.N. GEM MENA (Middle East-North Africa) teams and conflict zone specialists are deploying to Lybia to assist in the aftermath of the catastrophic floods that have taken thousands of lives.
Libyan officials said today that at least 11,300 people had died and another 10,100 were still reported missing. Mediterranean storm Daniel is behind the widespread flooding in the North African nation, as it washed away entire neighborhoods.
In Derna in the middle of the night while residents were asleep, the flood waters burst one dam, then a second damn burst, sending a huge wave of water, gushing down through the mountains towards the coastal Libyan city, killing thousands as entire neighborhoods were swept into the sea.
The eastern Libyan city of Derna, the epicenter of the disaster, had a population of around 100,000 before the tragedy. Authorities say that at least 10,000 remain missing.

GEM Latin America successfully delivered aid to 1,100 families affected by flooding in Belize, Central America. This was made possible through strategic partnerships with various governmental organizations including the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Risk and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples, and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), which is analogous to Conred in Guatemala and FEMA in the USA. Through these collaborations, GEM managed to eliminate importation taxes and logistical costs associated with this distribution, effectively reducing the expenses to zero dollars ($0).
Moreover, a portion of the individuals affected by the floods have disabilities, including blindness, leg amputations, cancer, and hearing impairments. Over 2,200 people are confirmed to have lost their lives so far, with many structures completely destroyed, including historical sites. We are operating between Marrakesh and the Altas Mountains.
We are delivering aid (food, water and hygiene,) to the most vulnerable communities. Each Family Food kit containing items like oil, tea, shampoo, hand soap, sugar, couscous, water, biscuits, and tuna. Post-distribution, GEM has faced challenges with restocking due to market shortages but managed to order 250 foam mattresses, highly requested by locals now sleeping in open spaces. GEM will be offering immediate humanitarian relief to all those affected.

Only as a result of a massive attack by rockets and drones on August 14, around 300 houses were damaged with 1,460 windows destroyed by the blast wave (total area of windows destroyed about 2,500 square meters).

Today GEM Ukraine had a meeting with Andriy Figel and Roman Hryhoryshyn, Deputy Heads of Odesa Regional Military Administration to discuss cooperation, summarize recent projects and visit some of the facilities where the works are carried out at the moment.
